What Happened To Zack Snyder's Justice League Is A 'Terrible Wrong' To Learn From, DC Colleague Says

It's been over a year since Justice League released, but people are still talking about what it could have been and not what it actually was. Some fans have been vocal about requests to see a Zack Snyder's director's cut of the movie, and they aren't the only ones. A few people who have worked on the film and saw what it was originally going to be have voiced how fans missed out, and photographer Clay Enos recently said that what happened to the movie was a "terrible wrong."

This is going to go down in film history as some sort of terrible wrong that can be righted, creatively. But what culture has to emerge for that to happen is something we need to work towards. We need to prioritize this sort of auteur filmmaker world and that hasn't been [happening] of late. So all of us need to support films that have the auteur's mark on them. Let's move gradually towards where the bottom line and the box office isn't the headline.

Due to a personal tragedy, Zack Snyder had to step away as the director of Justice League when the film was going into reshoots. These were reportedly extensive reshoots from the studio in order to course-correct the film based on the negative reaction to Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Ultimately, the changes didn't help the film, as it earned mixed reviews and underperformed at the box office. Since much of what Zack Snyder had originally planned was scrapped but mostly filmed, fans began asking for Warner Bros. to release the Snyder Cut. Due to several logistical reasons, that is unlikely to happen, but it hasn't stopped people who worked on Justice League from letting us know how much we are missing out.

Appearing on the The Farooqi Bros Podcast, still photographer Clay Enos talked about Justice League and how it was changed by the studio. Enos has collaborated with Snyder on several of his films, such as 300, Sucker Punch, Man of Steel, Batman V Superman, and Justice League. Enos didn't dish on how it was specifically different, but said that people need to support auteurs (directors with a distinct style and voice) so that studios are less likely to stamp out their vision.

While the studio system of making movies is not perfect, I don't think Warner Bros. not trusting Zack Snyder was the problem. They clearly did trust him in Man of Steel and BVS, two films that are very much Snyder films. It seems to me that the problem was that Warner had a panic attack and tried to redo Justice League too late in the game, potentially resulting a movie that was worse than it would have been.

While Zack Snyder's original vision for his Justice League movies sounded epic in scope, it never really does much good to wallow in what could have been. The DCEU has a bright future with lots of interesting projects in the works, and you can find what's coming down the pipeline here.

Why Fans Shouldn't Be Upset Venom Is Missing The Spider On His Chest

Marvel's murderous anti-hero, Venom, makes his way to the big screen once again when Ruben Fleischer's self-titled origin story opens in theaters on October 5. But for this iteration, changes needed to occur. Unlike in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, the wallcrawler can't be used here to inspire the creation of Venom, so Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) and the alien symbiote need to conjure a different backstory. That's not the only change, as the absence of Spider-Man in this story means a shift in the Marvel character's design, but when CinemaBlend spoke with Fleischer at a Venom press day, he explained why fans should get behind the alteration to Venom's signature look:

We had the reality that we couldn't feature Spider-Man [in this movie], so we had to get creative on how to manage that. And I think we were actually really successful, and fans have been appreciative of the respect that we showed the comics. Whether it's changing the spider on his chest, which just, at first, people were like, 'That's sacrilege! How can you have Venom without a spider on his chest?' But then, when you understand the origin is different, than it just wouldn't make sense to have a spider on his chest. Fans, as soon as they saw those first trailers, they kind of embraced this version. And I've been so psyched to see tons of fan art where they're drawing Venom without a spider on his chest. And that seems to me an indication that they liked this version. They liked the way he looks.

From his earliest days as a Marvel Comics character, Venom resembled a Hulk-sized Spider-Man, primarily because both Eddie Brock and the alien symbiote shared a deep hatred for Peter Parker. When they combined forces to become Venom, they assumed the look of the black-costumed Spidey, and a ferocious rivalry was born.

Venom can't take that approach, as Marvel and Sony are currently using Tom Holland and Spider-Man in the MCU, so they cooked up a new origin for Eddie (Tom Hardy) and the symbiote... one that doesn't involve a hatred for Spidey. It meant a new design, and the removal of the spider on Venom's chest.

But Ruben Fleischer is correct about the reaction of fan art to people who are digging the design of the new Venom from the movie.

From what we have seen of Venom, the character design looks sleek and comic-accurate, with Tom Hardy stepping into a hulking menace of a Venom suit that has all of the incredible powers of the symbiote -- from his octopus-type tendrils to the razor-sharp teeth that fill his mouth. You likely won't miss the spider on his chest, as it's less of a dealbreaker as many might believe. But judge for yourself once Venom reaches theaters on October 5.
