Star Wars: Episode 9 Rumors - Will Darth Vader Return?

Star Wars: Episode 9 Rumors - Will Darth Vader Return?

Warning: The following is mostly just rumor and speculation but if any of this bears out, it would constitute SPOILERS for Star Wars: Episode IX**!**

When it comes to Star Wars: Episode IX, we currently have no solid ground upon which to base our speculation. Weve seen no images, no trailer and have no title or synopsis. Absent firm facts, we are left to wade out into the realm of rumor to guess what this movie is about and what will happen in it. Fortunately, there is no shortage of rumors about the final chapter in the Skywalker Saga. So ask the Mos Eisley Bartender Wuher to pass the salt as we dig in to a particularly exciting rumor.

This rumor is not really one but several that have cropped up during our wait for the film, and they all point towards the same conclusion: Darth Vader or Hayden Christensens Anakin Skywalker -- or both -- will appear in Star Wars: Episode IX.

Anakin or Darth Vader has seemingly been rumored for every film in the sequel trilogy, and with Star Wars: Episode IX declared to be the last film in the Skywalker Saga, it provides the last opportunity to deliver on this.

One rumor is that there was a set constructed for a scene to be shot at Mount Etna in Italy, an active volcano where footage was filmed for the battle on Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith. This leads to the conclusion that we will see Vaders Castle in this film.

There are also a variety of rumors that Kylo Ren will have a scene with Vader. One is that Kylo will see a vision of Darth Vader having his mechanical appendages upgraded to new ones. Another permutation has the constantly conflicted Ben Solo on his knees surrounded by the Force Ghost of Anakin Skywalker, constantly shifting between Anakin and Darth Vader.

In addition, there are rumors that Luke will share a scene with his father and that Anakin will speak to Rey as she tries to repair his lightsaber. And finally, most recently, Express reported the rumor that Disney is negotiating for Hayden Christensen to return to film a scene for Star Wars: Episode IX.

That's a lot, and it all should be taken with huge grains of salt, but there is enough smoke here that its worth looking to see if theres any fire, and considering how Darth Vader/Anakin could show up in this movie and what it would mean if he did.

The repercussions of Darth Vaders existence and actions have been a small but not insignificant part of the sequel trilogy. In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we saw that Ben Solo looked up to his grandfather, idolized him and sought to continue his work as Darth Vader. He practically worshipped him and kept his broken helmet as a totem.

That thread was far less prevalent in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, with Kylo Ren instead espousing his desire to let the past die. With J.J. Abrams returning for Episode IX, it seems possible that he might want to pick back up with that storyline to close out Kylo Rens arc.

It certainly seemed like J.J. Abrams had bigger plans for Anakin in the sequel trilogy considering that based on some concept art, the character almost appeared in The Force Awakens as a Force Ghost amalgamation of Anakin and Vader similar to what was described in one of the aforementioned rumors.

Peter Sciretta of Slashfilm recently hinted that we could find clues about Episode IX in that early concept art from The Force Awakens. He shut down fans that thought that this was a reference to the Anakin concept art, but still, it is worth noting that J.J. Abrams and company may be looking to their original ideas for this trilogy for inspiration for Star Wars: Episode IX.

As to whether or not this rumor will actually pan out, its hard to say. Neither Disney nor Lucasfilm has indicated that Hayden Christensen will be returning to the franchise for Episode IX but it could just be another surprise like Yoda in The Last Jedi. This rumor also does sound a bit like wishful thinking from fans. That said, J.J. Abrams is a fan and if he really is trying to right the ship with this film, the goodwill a Darth Vader or Anakin appearance would bring definitely wouldnt hurt.

The majority of the rumors point towards Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker showing up as a Force Ghost and that seems the most plausible way this could happen that wouldnt break mythology or retcon things. It seems highly unlikely that Darth Vader or Anakin would be fully resurrected in this final film, and the Force Ghost route provides plenty of flexibility for him to show up in a way that would fit the story.

The easiest way that Anakin could show up as a Force Ghost would be a simple cameo. He could appear at the end of the film Return of the Jedi style alongside Yoda, Luke and perhaps Obi-Wan Kenobi. Or, if Rey is seeking guidance from the Jedi Masters that came before her, she could confer with Luke, Obi-Wan and Anakin We do not grant you the rank of Master Skywalker.

It wouldnt be too out there for Anakin to appear to Rey when she is repairing his lightsaber either. She had a vision when she touched the lightsaber the first time, so it could totally happen again, this time with a Hayden Christensen appearance. The actor has said in the past that hed return to the franchise if asked, so thats one reason to think Anakin showing up is possible.

Darth Vader proper appearing in this film is a little trickier, but still doable. The easiest way would be via a flashback or vision. If Kylo Ren is tracking down Sith artifacts or relics of Darth Vader, maybe one of them could be imprinted with Vaders spirit in some way, producing a vision of the Sith Lord. Or maybe he will find a Sith Holocron on Mustafar.

In theory, Anakin Skywalker found redemption in the end and his Force Ghost should now be him as Anakin like we saw in Return of the Jedi. So he shouldnt be showing up as Force Ghost Vader. That said, we dont know the mechanics of how Force Ghosts work or if Sith have them so maybe there is some wiggle room there.

It would make total sense for Darth Vader or Anakin or an amalgamation of the two to appear to Kylo Ren. Although he seemed to turn the corner fully to the Dark Side in the last film, Ben Solos struggle with the light has been central to his character throughout this trilogy, much as Anakin struggled with the dark in the prequels. If Kylo Ren is to be redeemed, having Anakin/Vader show up in Kylos story might be one way to force him to see his grandfathers mistakes and that he changed sides in the end.

Unlike some of the other rumors out there -- like Mara Jade -- I think that Anakin or Darth Vader returning for Star Wars: Episode IX is both possible, desirable and an organic continuation and culmination of this story. There are already established plot threads that set up a Darth Vader/Anakin return so it wouldnt feel out of left field and having Hayden Christensen show up in Star Wars: Episode IX would also serve the purpose of uniting all three trilogies as many fans are hoping this film does.

And this is it, the final chapter in the Skywalker Saga. Anakin Skywalker is the most central figure in that Saga, so it is only right that he shows up in some way, one last time to help bring closure to this story as it ends.

Star Wars: Episode IX blasts into theaters on December 20. Check out our release guide for all of the year's biggest movies and let us know in the poll below and the comments what you think about this rumor.

Ready Player One Has Screened, Here's What People Are Saying

Ready Player One Has Screened, Here's What People Are Saying

Earlier this weekend, a special announcement was made down in Austin, Texas, with Warner Bros. revealing that the SXSW Film Festival would see the world premiere of Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One. Now that screening has gone down, with a few film professionals in the audience, and their first reactions to the feature are online.

The screening apparently had some technical issues, dealing with sound problems and screen freezes in the third act, but it eventually finished, letting the folks there publically express their thoughts. We'll start with TCM and FilmStruck host Alicia Malone - who offered a bit of criticism while offering that the audience in Austin went absolutely nuts for the film. She emphatically recommends reading Ernest Cline's novel first, but overall has positive things to say about Ready Player One:

Erik Davis from Fandango was a bit more enthusiastic in his response. After also noting the impressive noise made by the crowd at SXSW, he expressed that this is a special kind of Steven Spielberg movie that we have not seen in a long time, and that he was entertained the whole way through:

One person who definitely isn't in the Ready Player One camp is Pajiba's Kristy Puchko, who doesn't think the film is so much built on fun references as much as it is an exploitation of nostalgia. First referring to it as a "cacophonous eye-sore," she pointed out this irony about the narrative's villain, played by Ben Mendelsohn:

Lastly we have Grae Drake from Rotten Tomatoes, who was apparently swept away by her Ready Player One experience. Her positivity is primarily targeted at the film's visuals and effects, suggesting that it's a unique experience.

Ready Player One, which stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg and Mark Rylance, arrives in theater at the end of this month, heading the cinemas on March 29th. Stay tuned for more of our coverage here on CinemaBlend, including our own review!

Why Are Rom-Coms Making a Comeback?

Why Are Rom-Coms Making a Comeback?

Once upon a time, romantic comedies were everywhere! Between Julia Roberts and Meg Ryan, Matthew McConaughey and Adam Sandler, actors could build their careers around the genre. In 2001, rom-coms were just as saturated as todays superhero flicks, as The Princess Diaries, Legally Blonde, Bridget Joness Diary, The Wedding Planner, Kate and Leopold (and more) all debuted. It was a winning formula that continued to reach audiences and create timeless classics time after time.

Then the formula tired. Maybe audiences had seen just enough women working at fashion magazines and touching grand gestures her guy thinks up by the end? Fewer rom-coms graced the screen and more badass female heroines started dominating blockbuster franchises. But in 2019, Hollywood says Why not both? With What Men Want and Isnt It Romantic coming to theaters within a week of each other and more upcoming rom-com projects soon on the way, the genre is making a comeback.

Why are more rom-coms standing in front of audiences asking us to love them again? Theres a few reasons, let's break it down:

Netflix Took The LeapBuzz over the return of the genre started brewing in summer 2018 when a string of Netflix rom-com originals hit the streaming service. People were watching and talking about films such as Set It Up and To All The Boys I Loved Before, and praising them for their fun and genuine takes on the genre. The streaming giant's accessibility had these rom-coms going viral at a time when the genre hadnt been adored by the mainstream in a while.

Netflix didnt seem to be taking a significant risk in producing these rom-coms either because it makes everything. Rom-coms were the releases that were sticking, and while users werent taking much of a risk either to sit on their couch and choose a lighthearted love story for movie night, the success of these titles namely with To All The Boys, which is already getting a sequel means an interest had clearly sparked.

Crazy Rich Asians Made A Cash SplashWithin the same week of the release of All The Boys Who Loved Before, Crazy Rich Asians opened in theaters to an impressive No. 1 opening weekend, later scoring over $238 million worldwide and becoming the first big hit for the genre since 2009s The Proposal.

Yes, Crazy Rich Asians delivered on the first all-Asian cast in two decades but the movie was distinctly a romantic comedy style flick and it worked. It didnt completely feel recycled or by-the-numbers because new faces were being showcased, it was exploring a culture the genre doesnt typically go for and the happily ever after wasnt the guy-gets-girl formula; it centered on the female protagonists own growth in her sense of self, amidst a few lovable clichs. Now, filmmakers will be looking at the success story of Crazy Rich Asians, especially considering how cheap for the studio to make ($30 million) and try to replicate it in new ways. Bok, bok, bitches! The rom-com is back and Crazy Rich Asians showcased that there is an audience for it in movie theaters.

They're Rewritten For A New PerspectiveOne reason the rom-com became irrelevant in recent years was because how overdone it started to feel. The same actors, writers and filmmakers kept cranking out entries for the genre, and after a while they tired the same storylines. What defines this new resurgence is how fresh and inclusive it feels. While audiences may be seeing some of the same clichs and tropes of the genre in these new films, they've never been told in the mainstream from these perspectives before, so moviegoers are more energized to check them out. Hollywood is selling a different kind of rom-com and the trend has kept moving forward. Since the industry is aware more then ever that audiences demand more from the stories being presented, they seem to be made with more thoughtfulness and relevance.

What Men Want is an interesting example because it actually borrows from the premise of the early 2000s romantic comedy What Women Want, starring Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt. It flips the dialogue by making it a woman who hears thoughts of men instead of the other way around. It also attempts to act as commentary for the struggles of women in male-dominated industries. Both ideas have been used before in rom-coms, literally in another movie of similar title and since women in this genre are constantly faced with some sort of work-related struggle. It feels different because a black womans perspective is in the mix, it's generally more aware of itself and theres new blood taking hold.

There's A Space To Let In DiversityComing down the pipeline are rom-coms coming from a range of new voices such as Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis starring as girlfriends in a holiday-set TriStar film Happiest Season and Billy Eichners recently announced gay rom-com to be produced by Judd Apatow under Universal. Insecures Issa Rae and Silicon Valleys Kumail Nanjiani are also teaming up to star in Paramounts Lovebirds, about a couple who are caught in a murder mystery. Fresh Off The Boats Randall Park and comedian Ali Wong will also star in Always Be My Maybe, and Grownishs Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton will star in A Sun is Also a Star.

In an industry constantly criticized for being too white, rom-coms certainly used to be a top offender. With the demand for new voices and the fact that there are so many making their way into the mainstream, the rom-com is becoming a great place to start. As said before, the genre doesnt typically cost too much to produce, and usually these movies will make their money back. When interest in supporting diversity is at an all-time high, theres room for them to become blockbusters too, and for different voices to dominate a once weary genre.

There's A Desire For Escapism and PredictabilityAudiences also arent taking a huge risk when they buy a ticket for a rom-com because the formula is still there nine times out of ten. Its comforting to walk into a movie knowing full well there will probably be some feel-good happy ending and everything will wrap up nice and tightly in a bow.

In a time when something like Avengers: Infinity War shocked audiences, the horror genre is remerging, dramas are combatting the intense issues and emotions of the day, and keeping up with cinematic universes sometimes asks a lot from fans to follow along, the romantic comedy is a comfy place for moviegoers to go again. Its a different type of escapism that is fun, potentially relatable and made for repeated viewings if done right.

So what do you think? Are you excited to see more rom-coms in the near future? Sound off in the comments below.
